Most European markets rallied to an upbeat close
Wednesday after on the heels of strong gains in the United States
the previous day.
The Dow Jones Stoxx Index of shares in European companies rose
5.61 points, or 1.5 percent, to 378.53. Technology and media shares
led gains, with the subindexes up 4.8 percent and 3.0 percent,
The Dow Jones Euro Stoxx Index which tracks companies in
countries that joined the single currency ended up 2.97 points at
422.82. The Dow Jones Euro Stoxx 50 Index was up 16.3 points at
5,078.2 and the Dow Jones Stoxx 50 Index up 72.5 points at 4,891.7.
In domestic markets, the FTSE 100 closed down 1.8 percent, at
6,184.9. Technology and telecom stocks rose with Cable & Wireless
up 5.5 percent, Sage up 10.7 percent and ARM Holdings up 4.5
percent. Vodafone Airtouch, was up 4.5 percent.
Frankfurt's Xetra DAX Index ended up 0.3 percent to 7,216.71.
SAP rose 10.5 percent, while Siemens and Deutsche Telecom also
The Paris CAC-40 Index was up 0.3 percent to 6,166.46, led by
media and technology blue chips Cap Gemini, Lagardere and
Amsterdam's AEX Index was up 1.2 percent to 654.17, while
Milan's MIBtel Index ended down 0.1 percent to 29,842.
